With so many styles and options to chose from buying your first baby crib can be a daunting task. Its a good idea to know what you want before you set out to the store and get bombarded with information and sales pitches. There are various elements to consider when buying a baby crib, first know your price range baby cribs can range from $150 to $1500 so have an idea of how much you can afford to spend and take it from there. Second know what features you want, all new baby cribs come with at lease the minimum recommended safety standards but this is an area that needs the most attention as your babys safety will be number 1 priority.

A safe crib should have a tight-fitting mattress, check for missing or broken hardware and slats should be no more than 2 3/8" apart. Recommended height for corner posts is no higher than 1/16".Drop down sides are a popular feature but may be a thing of the past as the safety standards board are considering reviewing this feature and recommending instead stationary sides. As your baby gets older and more able to maneuver and manipulate these features its more likely that this can cause accidents of babies falling from the crib.

Convertible baby cribs are a common option but really bump up the price of the baby crib so decide before hand if your child will go straight to a single bed when he/she outgrows the crib, remember eventually they will need a single bed so the convertible crib is intermediary and just an added expense.

Adjustable mattress height is a feature on most cribs this allows easier placement of a newborn into the crib when the mattress is high, and provides more safety for an older baby when the mattress is low. A metal spring system is the safest and most efficient choice to hold up the mattress. Also a caster wheels are a really good feature to have as it makes maneuvering the crib much easier on you and on the carpeting or floorboards, so its worthwhile investing in these.
